A letter for their personnel files

Dear Will & Reina:

Your Dad and I would like to personally congratulate you both on your great achievement last night. For this first time since Feb. 10, 2009, you both slept through the night. Your dad and I were completely unprepared for this event but we greatly appreciate your teamwork and perseverance. We hope that this outstanding effort will continue as it will surely improve our organization's efficiency and performance.

Sincerely,

Your ever-so-slightly-less-sleep-deprived Mom

I want tractor!

The kids and I spent the weekend in Brighton so that Glenn could go scout for his antelope hunt without being consumed by the guilt that comes with leaving your doting wife at home with a 2 1/2 yr old and a 6-month old. Everybody had a great time! It was one of the hottest weekends of the summer but we did our best to stay cool. Will loves Grandma and Pop-pops house and Reina loves not having to sit, lay or sleep by herself all weekend.

On Saturday morning we got to ride horses and drive tractors. We practically had to peel Will off of the tractor when it was time to leave. Here he is waiting rather patiently for the tractor action to start. Will abandoned the tractor for about 45 seconds so he could go on a horseback ride with his Pop-pop. My dad still looks like a cowboy huh? Back to the tractor! Here's Will and his new BFF Donna who patiently let him drive the tractor while she spread manure. On Saturday afternoon, we ventured out to the zoo. It was actually not a bad place to be on a 96 degree day. Will was pretty impressed with the elephants and giraffes. He said "hi" to the monkeys several times and seemed a little confused when they didn't say "hi" back. Here's reason #9,549 why Reina is going to hate me when she's older. "Mom - that picture makes my legs look huge!" Sorry about the pose Reina-girl. You just look so cute all melted into the stroller. Look at this face! Don't you just want to cover her in butter and jelly and eat her up like a little biscuit? Is it just me?

Will's constant why-ing continues. On Sunday we are getting in the car for church and Will starts up with the why's.

Will: We are going?

Grandma H: We are going to church.

Will: Why?

Lucy: Go ahead mom, I'd like to hear your theological response.

Grandma H: (after a long pause) Because that's what we do on Sunday mornings.

Why?

It's started already. The endless "why" from Will. Here's a direct transcript of a conversation we had tonight.

Will: Momma, what's that?
Me: That's baby's cereal.
Will: Why?
Me: Because she's hungry.
Will: Why?
Me: Because we need to eat food to have energy blah blah blah, oh look Will - is that Daddy outside?

Every question that is not answered to his satisfaction gets a "why?" This is going to be soooo fun.

Reina had her 6-month check-up today. The doctor said she looks great. She's 16 pounds 11 oz, which puts her in the 60%. I can't remember her height but whatever it was puts her in the 25% so now she's a little shorty. The doctor did point out that the height measurement is really inaccurate at this age because they are so squirmy. So I guess I'll try to not worry about my little dwarf baby right now.

No pictures this week because Will was playing with my device that is used to transfer pictures from the camera to the computer and now it's missing. It's probably hidden in his secret cache with two pairs of my sunglasses, an Elmo DVD and all of Reina's pacifiers. Lesson learned.

Reina - 6 months old!

Today Reina is six months old! In honor of her six months, here's a list of 6 things that she's eaten or tried to eat in the last few days:
1. smashed bananas with b-milk and a little bit of rice cereal
2. a handful of greek salad
3. paper
4. her feet
5. did I mention paper?
6. her dad's hand

Here she is trying to figure out her busy schedule for the month. Let's see, she's got a cut and color on the 13th and a speaking engagement on the 18th. . . Lest we forget, here's Big Brother. Who needs expensive kid toys? Just give him a storage box and a lid with a hinge.

Who stole my infant.....?

and replaced with her with this little chunky-monkey, opinionated, semi-mobile baby girl? Reina's almost six months old and she continues to change on a daily basis. Her latest escapades include rolling from her back on to her tummy in an effort to grab something (that probably belongs to her brother), trying cereal for the first time (see picture further below), and breaking in two teeth! I'm pretty sure Reina's plans for next week include getting her learner's permit, ears pierced and becoming a vegetarian. I've been thinking that Reina and Will look a lot alike - they have the same smile and very similar expressions when they are extremely mad. I pulled out a few pictures from Will's six-month photo shoot for comparison. Turns out they don't look that much alike. Will was definitely rounder - his head is almost perfectly shaped - it looks like a hairy canteloupe with an immaculate complexion. I think they may have the same hair though. Poor things. Look at those forearms! I'm pretty sure if there had been a baby arm wrestling circuit, we'd have a world champ on our hands. Can you believe that this is the same face that now tells me to get out of his room? And then points at the door in case I'm not sure which exit he wants me to use? Awww, the good ol' days.

This is the only type of picture that I can get of Mr. Melonhead these days.
Okay, back to my girl and her first foray into the world of solid foods. Not so impressed frankly. With as much interest as she's had for everything on my plate and in my hands, she wasn't that fond of the cereal. She did perfect the art of 'letting it dribble out of my mouth and all down the front of my bib' very quickly. "Seriously people, are you feeding me gruel?"
Reina looks solemn in a lot of these pictures which is ironic because she's a pretty smiley girl. We pulled out the exer-saucer out of storage last weekend and let her give it a try. A few minutes after I took this picture, I took her upstairs for a nap. While I was up there I heard a really loud crashing/bouncing plastic sound and peeked down the stairs. Turns out Will decided to give the exer-saucer another try. Who knew that the plastic could withstand 34 pounds of bouncing toddler!

Stop bothering me mom! I'm lying here looking beautiful ...and plotting my escape!

Montana Trip

A few weeks ago, we piled everyone into the car and took a mini-vacation to Rick Lee's ranch near Musselshell, Montana. Before we left, we packed and packed and packed and bought Will a helmet to protect his cute little noggin. At certain glances, he looked like the Dark Helmet character from Space Balls.

Once we got to the ranch, we spent many hours, driving four-wheelers, hiking, shooting trap and spending lots of time outdoors. We also napped. And spent some quality time with our cousins.

We also spent several hours smiling and looking very cute.
We ate lots of good food and drank about 4 tanker trucks worth of capri sun. It was hot.

Some of us ate butter.
And some of us played fast-food drive-thru window for hours.

We had a fantastic time. The ranch is one of my new favorite places in all the West. Rick and his family are gracious, wonderful hosts and we are so thankful to have such a great place to visit.
